...film lacks a convincing historical grounding and the initial battles become entertaining occasions for fancy horse tricks, barn burnings, gunfights and bloodshed. The men seem to enjoy the brotherhood of slaughter and use the Civil War as an excuse to release testosterone. Jonathan Rhys Meyers, while adding to the cast of visually appealing young males, should never be seen in Civil War costume again. He looks like a rock star attempting to cut a hip urban cowboy image for a music video rather than the blood-thirsty, Roedel-hating Bushwacker Pitt Mackeson. Why Mackeson actually hates Roedel remains a mystery...
...become working metaphors of representation and remembrance. The piece also thematizes the more recent and problematic immigration of refugees from the Balkans and former Soviet Union seeking asylum in Denmark. More personal is the series Untitled Memory (Projections), in which photographs of the artist's family and friends are cast upon the surfaces of his San Francisco apartment, creating an intimate and deceptively real experience...
...single goal in mind. The house, the vacation, the roommates, the new city were all unimportant. I was in it for the clothes. What clothes, you ask? Well, here's my plan (feel free to steal it if you ever get on an MTV show): the moment you're cast, you get on the phone with every major fashion designer in the world. Broadcast as a personality to hundreds of millions of captive...

There's an angry and suicidal Ernest Hemingway who acts as Garnett's servant, the under-recognized and frustrated feminist author Djuna Barnes, the heroine-addicted mother of Eugene O'Neil, and the aforementioned Anas Nin, played with delightfully French self-absorption by Karen MacDonald. Not to mention the entire cast of characters from The Brothers Karamazov, with Alyosha Karamazov (played with effective, i.e. not annoying, wholesomeness by Sean Dugan) serving as Durang's Everyman character in this absurdist romp...
...Meanwhile, the antics of Robin Williams the actor are somewhat constrained by his robotic casing, but he does as good a job as anyone could in making Andrew a deeply sympathetic character. He receives excellent assistance from the well-cast supporting players, especially Neill and Davidtz. Bicentennial Man may not answer-or even seriously address--the moral questions it begs, but as long as you don't expect it to, you'll find it a worthwhile holiday movie...
