David Cromer - the Chicago-based director who won acclaim for his recent off-Broadway revival of Our Town - handles all this with sensitivity and solemnity. (This is a real rara avis in New York theater: a play without laughs.) Perry has cast himself as a champion of Texas "values," and after all, he has spent 25 years in Austin - first as a state legislator, then agriculture commissioner, followed by lieutenant governor and then governor.
