...should be protected." After the meeting Farmer patiently argued with the woman and just as patiently reassured a young, blind Jewish man about relations between blacks and Jews. These days, Farmer, tall, stout and barrel-chested with an eyepatch and a sympathy for Moshe Dayan, often finds himself cast in the role of moderate elder statesman...

...hijacked the Love Boat? The villain of the show is Father Dunleavy, whose fanatical cult takes over the transatlantic luxury liner Festivale and holds its passengers hostage for $70 million in ransom. Like Jones, Dunleavy is said to be charismatic, sexy and demonic, but ABC is too smart to cast the role with an actor who might offend a Nielsen family. Instead, Dunleavy is played by Telly Savalas, whose bland manner and leisure suits make him seem more like a Las Vegas maitre d' than a satanic killer...

...supporting players are no less tacky. The pouty Michelle Phillips, as the ship's social director, wears so many silly getups that one might think ABC is trying to trick viewers into thinking that she is Cher. The blow-dried Chad Everett (Medical Center) is cast as a Pulitzer-prizewinning author who wears what appears to be a Pulitzer Prize medal on a gold chain around his neck. There are real French actors in the cast - Marie-France Pisier, Louis Jourdan - as well as ersatz French men like James Coco. Brooklynese is provided by Shelley Winters, who seems...

Next to Concorde, Meteor is a paltry piece of goods. The astrophysicists who must save the world from a comet attack include such garden-variety stars as Natalie Wood and Brian Keith (both with Russian accents) and Sean Connery (inexplicably cast as a NASA scientist). Karl Maiden stomps through the film in such a rage that you would think a hotel had refused to honor his traveler's checks. When the comet's "splinters" finally hit earth, wiping out a Swiss ski resort and a drive-in theater in Pisa, all Meteor...

Increasing slate loyalty among black voters is another way the CCA could improve its electoral performance. Three black candidates--Saundra Graham. Alvin Thompson and Severlin Singleton--ran for council this year. Only one, incumbent Graham, was elected. The second-choice votes on the ballots cast for all three tended to be for one of the other black candidates. Often voters chose the three blacks and didn't bother to vote past that. How to pick up stronger slate support from black voters is a tricky problem, but one the CCA must address if it wants the few hundred votes that...
