Continuing its program of manned space exploration, NASA also made ingenious use of castoff Apollo hardware to create Skylab. Despite a troubled beginning and now its embarrassing demise, the giant space station represented another great leap. In 1973, three teams of astronauts occupied the station in rapid succession, one remaining aloft for 84 days. That record was not beaten by the Russians until 1978. More important, it proved to all doubters-and there were many-that humans could live and work together in space for long periods, conquering both isolation and the physical effects of weightlessness, such as weakening...
...this entry, Peter Sellers' Inspector Clouseau has never been balmier, and Dyan Cannon gives new blouse to the word blowsy as a sharpshooting businessman's castoff mistress. The movie has more plot than Birth of a Nation, and there is no sign anywhere (save during the credits) of a panther; but those who have battered their thought processes through four previous PPs could care less: they just want more, if possible without paraquat...
...surprisingly, the new league has introduced a mini-galaxy of new stars. When Csonka, Kiick and Warfield signed with the Toronto Northmen for a combined total of $3 million, everybody figured the World Football League was on its way a lot quicker than the old AFL. After all, the AFL was knee-deep in pro wrestlers, cowboys, antique Olympians, mystics, and castoff construction workers for a good part of their first five years of existence. Back then, no one thought of tapping Paul Hornung or Bart Starr on the shoulder and asking him if he would be interested in mere cash. These were gods and they were playing in the big leagues...
...cost $2.6 billion and tapped the best of American technology; yet Skylab sometimes behaved like a castoff from a used-car lot. First it lost vital shielding and an electricity-generating solar wing. Then its steering rockets per formed so badly that NASA thought of sending up rescuers to evacuate its three-man crew. Finally, two of its stabilizing gyros faltered, threatening to send the 100-ton space station yawing and pitching like an angry whale...
