...Fidel Castro was less than complimentary when Houari Boumedienne replaced Ahmed Ben Bella as leader of revolutionary Algeria seven years ago. "A pimp," was the Cuban Premier's unbowdlerized estimate of Boumedienne. "A reactionary gorilla." ...determinedly socialist state with an overlay of stern Arab tradition -women have second-class status-Algeria may not necessarily be a just society. But it is an economically more viable one than Cuba. It is also, as Castro may well have observed, a study in paradoxes. Despite the agonies that Algerians suffered at the hands of the French in the eight-year war for independence, ties with France remain remarkably strong. ...like a fairly good grade of college humor, but it is a good deal more: the fond, wondering recollection of a double exile, a man separated by circumstance from his country and by a decade and more from his youth. (Author Cabrera Infante, 42, is a leftist who regards Castro as a Stalinist and a gangster, and now lives in London.) His book is a remarkably good novel of memory, and it is memory that splits the images and works the magnifications, producing the prose pratfalls, the crosscutting of parody and boozy interior monologue, the bits of trivia...
