...recount of ballots cast in the Nov. 3 municipal election has shown that advocates of fluoridation of the City's water supply won their case, 16,069 to 16,027. This result enlarged the earlier 21 vote margin that had served as a basis for the recount petition...
...involving an exiled Hungarian nobleman returning to claim his father's estate, a beautiful gypsy maid who is really a princess, a treasure buried on the land of a rich and comic pig farmer -is a typical operetta mixture of farce and romance. Unfortunately, Director Ritchard and his cast could not quite make up their minds whether they were working for laughs or for sentiment. And for reasons best known to himself, Translator Valency had his Hungarians rising in a patriotic revolt against Austrian oppression (the 74-year-old original involved merely a musical-comedy war against Spain...
...Conductor Erich Leinsdorf, a Mozart specialist, led the orchestra correctly, but without paprika. It is interesting to note, too, that they are a most ordinary looking lot, as the most complex individuals. But here, the actors make an effort to keep their characterizations on the proletarian level called for in the script. One believes that Valentina Telegina (who looks, incidentally, like a peasant mother symbol) is an uncomplicated woman devoted to her family and not bothered by the "greater things" taking place around...
