...major cities last week-Brooklyn and Milwaukee-the season reached a roaring climax as the Dodgers and Braves fought it out for the National League pennant (see SPORT). Such was the objection of Ebbets Field to Umpire Vic Delmore when he made a bad call on Catcher Campanella at second base that there came a revelation, to hear the New York Herald Tribune's Columnist Red Smith tell it, "that at least 34,022 people in Brooklyn have white handkerchiefs, a fact previously unsuspected." Such was the absorption of Milwaukee in the Braves that the arrival there of Campaigner...
...eighth inning. Leftfielder Bobby Thomson promptly put an end to that rally by thoughtlessly trying to steal home. Apoplectic over this final foolishness, Manager Fred Haney fined Bobby $100. Apparently he did not think it worth while to beef that Bobby was probably safe in spite of himself. Dodger Catcher Campanella had jumped a good yard out of the catcher's box before Pitcher Roger Craig got rid of the ball. When they bothered to look, the Braves discovered that they had won 8-7, had taken back their one-game lead...
...Newk took on the Phillies, and his teammates got him what he wanted. They got four runs in the first inning, fielded flawlessly as the pitcher worked away with a lazy grace. His big curve snapped wickedly off the corners of the plate, his fast ball boomed into the catcher's mitt, and his sneaky change-up gave the batters fits. For six innings he had a no-hitter. Then Philadelphia First Baseman Marv Blaylock blooped a single. Catcher Stan Lopata backed it up with a home run. But the Dodgers ran it out, 5-2, and Big Newk...
...cold. At 30 Long is one of the oldest Pirate regulars (average age of the regular lineup: 25). For a while it looked as if he would never make the majors. He bounced around eleven minor leagues, came up to the Pirates three times-once as a left-handed catcher-and finally caught on last year. Not all fans and sportswriters give Rickey credit for building this year's team, and they cite his rubber-ball bouncing of Long's career as evidence. Late-Bloomer Long gives Manager Bragan a big share of the credit for his sudden...
...name, Trapeze offers plenty of exciting sideshows, and the favorite distraction is sure to be Gina Lollobrigida, who keeps drifting across the screen in pretty, scant costumes. Gina is a lowly trampolinist who wants to fly high, and she keeps trying to climb the rigging with the "catcher" (Lancaster) in the aerial act, but Burt will not give her a tumble. He does all his catching on the high bar with Tony Curtis, and he refuses to let a woman come between them. But Gina keeps pitching those curves, and pretty soon both Burt and Tony are grabbing at everything...
