Died. General Georges Catroux, 92, French officer whose career mirrored his nation's colonial fortunes; of influenza; in Paris. Catroux led troops during the conquests in North Africa, the Middle East and Indo-China, but later joined De Gaulle in dissolving the empire. He personally issued the proclamation freeing Syria in September 1941 and Lebanon two months later, in 1955 negotiated the return of the Sultan of Morocco to his throne and later vigorously supported Algerian independence.
