NIGHT HAS fallen on a barge moving slowly down a French canal. Its crew, a halfwit body and a hulking old man, are forward with the young captain. His new bride is aft, trying to steer the ungainly boat by its heavy tiller. Her husband crawls back along the catwalk to her; silhouetted half over the water with face upturned his doubled over figure resembles some odd monster coming into the camera. He reaches her; they embrace and tumble to the deck. Their figures in medium close shot are indistinct, but the bridal gown she is still wearing burns white...
...simple expedient of blowing up the main bridges. They had left just one bridge intact-at Awaza-and it was heavily mined. When federal marine comman dos stepped onto the bridge, it, too, exploded and vanished. The blast, however, failed to stop federal soldiers from running across the catwalk on top of a natural-gas pipeline that spanned the river parallel to the bridge. As 50 virtually unarmed Biafran guards watched helplessly, a steady line of Nigerians made their way across the catwalk and pierced the Ibo heartland...
Countdown-Minus-10. At 1 p.m. on Friday last week, Grissom, White and Chaffee strolled casually into the gantry elevator on Pad 34, rose swiftly to a sterilized "white room," then ambled along the 20-ft. catwalk to the stainless-steel hull of the capsule, now secured to the Saturn rocket inside the launching complex. The craft was like an old friend, for they had spent hours in it during vacuum-chamber tests in the Houston Space Center, had run through identical launch-simulation procedures several times before...

Heavy smoke began to seep from the capsule, filling the white room. A workman sprinted across the catwalk leading to the craft, tried desperately to loosen the hatch cover. He was driven back by the intense heat and smoke, but half a dozen other technicians, some wearing face masks and asbestos gloves, raced to help. One or two would try to wrench open the hatch, then fall back from the scorching heat while others struggled...
...hose and an oxygen mask. Then Reynolds spent three hours spraying water around his oven-hot compartment. Commander Richard M. Bellinger, a 205-lb. jet pilot who was awarded the Silver Star last month, ripped out an air conditioner, wriggled naked through the tiny opening to a burning catwalk and escape. Others were not so lucky...
