...abundance of jungle animals is due to Rio's spectacular setting, caught between sea and serra, with the central hills and northern suburbs carved out of - and still split by - the Atlantic Forest. The western suburbs, meanwhile, are bordered by a swamp system whose most famous inhabitants are denoted by the area's indigenous name, Jacarepagua, or Alligator Harbor...

...changes caught even some SPD leaders by surprise. Beck was visibly miffed by the way Steinmeier's selection to head the ticket was announced. In a statement on his website, he accused the media and enemies within the party of conspiring against him to give a "false impression" of how that decision was made. In a radio interview on Monday, Andrea Nahles, a close ally of Beck's on the party's left wing, blamed "snipers from his own ranks" for Beck's resignation...

She also paints canvases, has them painstakingly photographed, then (supposedly) destroys the original works before mounting an exhibition of only the photographs...

A month earlier, he'd arrived in Buenos Aires on a chartered flight with Argentine energy officials and executives of Venezuela's state-run oil company, Petroleos de Venezuela (PDVSA). Argentine customs agents then caught him with a suitcase stuffed with $800,000 in cash. Antonini was allowed to return to the U.S. - but it seemed the entire hemisphere wanted to know if he'd been carrying the money for Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez as some sort of bribe for the Argentine government...
