Philip Snowden, the "ascetic, intellectual type of burning enthusiast," "a frail figure of a man who walks with a stick,"- "the man with a hatchet face and small burning eyes sunk deep beneath a projecting brow," the man whose caustic sarcasm has caused his opponents to wither, was known to be a Socialist. Only last Summer he introduced a bill to suppress the capitalist system (TIME, July 23). Small wonder, then, that Socialism was the thought uppermost in the minds of the assembled M.P.'s when Philip Snowden appeared on the Treasury Bench...

Lamont was particularly caustic in commenting on what he considered the poor showing of the class of 1927, since $100 more was realized by last year's Senior class, but he believes that the class of 1924 will be greatly enriched as a result of the donation of 1,910,000 German marks. According to the 1924 financial statistician, there is an excellent chance of the mark "coming back" before the Twenty-fifth Anniversary, and the marks will be put in a strong box until that time...

...Mind in the Making," by J. H. Robinson. An analysis of this surprising survey brings to light some interesting and significant data. Since only five of the books are novels, the American reading public, apparently, is not so hopelessly devoted to the appeals of pure fiction as caustic critics would have one believe. On the other hand, the fact that the first five books have all been published within the last six years makes it seem that many readers cast their votes on a basis of recency rather than of intelligent reflection. Although only two native sons are among...

...Chaulmoogra seeds, from which the oil is extracted, are a product of a tree which grows freely in Burma, Bengal and Assam. The oil with a little caustic soda added, yields sodium chaulmoograte, and free chaulmoogric acid is obtained by the addition of hydrochloric acid. If a little alcohol is poured into this chaulmoogric acid ethyl chaulmoograte is obtained, that is, ethyl estermiscible with blood...
