Diller had other reasons to err on the side of caution. While serving as chairman of Rupert Murdoch's Fox Inc. in the late 1980s, he saw how excessive debt almost sank that entertainment company. In the end, Diller essentially threw in his hand and let Redstone rake in the pot. For Redstone, the triumph in what he angrily came to call "the cruel, abusive and sometimes ridiculous battle for Paramount" could hardly have been sweeter. With the battle about to end last Monday, Redstone, Biondi and two Viacom colleagues repaired to the posh "21" Club in midtown Manhattan...

...confessed. "I come here a lot... at least once a week. I can't stand Hollywood films, which is not to say we're film mavens... [or] film theory people." Jones paused to consider his last statement, frowned under his black goatee, then decided to throw caution to the wind. "We're snobs, basically," he grinned...

But Evy insisted on caution because of scar tissue: "We've had to push it, but we couldn't push it to the point of reinjury because then you're through." So there were sessions of swimming and weight lifting. And the bike. "I have to use the bike to loosen up, and I hate...

Another ingredient of medical-cost containment involves the decision by many hospitals, pharmaceutical companies and other providers to stabilize or lower their prices, perhaps in hopes of heading off congressional action on health- care reform. This, at least, is the argument advanced by Administration experts who caution that decelerating costs could prove illusory and that only a full-scale, Clinton-style reform with mandatory price restraints can tackle the job in the long run. "Medical inflation slowed in the late 1970s just in time to defeat a previous effort at cost containment," recalls Laura Tyson, chairman of the Council...
