...Kennedy Institute of Politics, and Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. For the present, all the memorabilia, books and papers are stored in the Federal Records Center in Waltham, one of a dozen depositories for bureaucratic red tape dotting the United States. There, in a temperature and humidity controlled cavern which makes the Widener stacks look like a tot lot, the government has stored about 10 million pages of Kennedy's papers, along with 2 million pages from the Democratic National Committee. ...Turnberg started this vintage jewelry store 40 years ago and is still behind the counter today, a cluster of rhinestones sparkling in his ear. Twentieth Century Ltd. may be unique in its glamorous genre. According to Turnberg, jewel-starved customers regularly come up from New York, where no such cavern of riches exists. It is not difficult to understand their devotion. Entering the store is like having magically fallen into the gigantic jewelry box of a demi-mondaine. There is not a square inch of space here that does not shimmer or shine. Prices range widely, but the rhinestones...
Still, the caves are a remarkable refuge. I entered my first one by walking through a narrow 20-ft. passage chiseled into a 60[degree] mountain slope--the effect was of walking through a deep cavern open to the sky. I stepped over two rows of sandbags that blocked the passage and came to a 3-ft. opening. I ducked into the mouth and dared go no farther. Not even Haji Zahir's fighters would follow, and several were making boom noises and gesturing about flying body parts. Everybody expected booby traps or mines...
