...Pete A. Steciuk '03 has been a Boy Scout for 12 years. The wimpy New England sensibilities have not stifled his inner woodsman. In order to escape the wilds of his roommates' mess, he constructs tents MacGyver-style with delicate everyday linens. A cave shelter over his own bed remains standing. A well-prepared Boy Scout, he admits that he has a "stash of Pringles, fruit bars and raisins buried under the tent...

...half-hour later he'd led them back to the olive grove and the cave at Gethsemane where they'd been sleeping. Eight of them went straight in, dead beat, and stretched out on the floor near the oil press. But Jesus took Peter, James and John and pressed on a few yards into the dark grove. He asked the inner three to wait while he prayed. They were tired as the others, but they nodded that they'd wait, and he walked ahead some dozen paces to the oldest tree. That last invention is built on a claim in the Protogospel of James that Jesus was born in a cave in Bethlehem, and on a hint from the apostle Paul, who mentions that the risen Jesus appeared "to the Twelve," not the Eleven. None of the canonical Gospels, however, follow Paul's lead; yet the variety of their Resurrection stories is both convincing and unnerving. Most of them have a grainy credibility; at least one (Matthew's) seems generic and manufactured. Paul's account, in I Corinthians 15, was written some 25 years after Jesus' death and precedes Mark...

Finally, let us examine Buchanan as hick, a fruit-loop, a crazy, lunatic cave-dweller. Unfortunately, this sort of ridicule does not work as a social value defense strategy. It does not persuade people of the benefits of open markets, international engagement, immigration, racial and religious tolerance. Satiric witticisms amuse us at Harvard (or those of us in Sydney) but simply serve to reinforce the suspicion of many Americans that the intellectual and political elite are laughing at them. Pat Buchanan is not a joke. He is a social specter hidden behind a political shroud...
