...sights of the land soon changed as U.S. deuce-and-a-halfs, Jeeps, bulldozers, helicopters and fighter aircraft raised whirlwinds of cinnamon-colored dust and sand as white as snow. In the north, some 45,000 marines clustered around Hué, Danang and Chu Lai. The new 1st Cav settled at An Khe, just off Route 19, main artery leading to the beleaguered Central Highlands. Qui Nhon, Route 19's eastern terminus, was held by South Korea's crack 15,000-man Capital Division...
...Come & Get It." A 1st Cav brigade set out immediately in pursuit of the retreating Reds to check out intelligence reports that seven and possibly nine 2,000-man regiments were assembling in the highlands. "I gave them their head," recalls Westmoreland, "and told them their mission was to pursue and destroy the enemy." In the foothills of the Chu Pong massif, practically in Cambodia's backyard, the brigade found its quarry. Helilifted to a spot called Landing Zone X Ray, a battalion of cavalrymen found itself smack in the midst of the 66th North Vietnamese regiment. One platoon...
...Rats & Spray. The bottleneck has not yet curtailed any major U.S. action in Viet Nam, but it has, as one officer puts it, "kept us in essentially a defensive position." At the 1st Air Cav's giant enclave at An Khe, Jeeps and trucks are only driven when absolutely necessary. The division is short of gas, while two huge ocean-going tankers loll in the Saigon River waiting to be unloaded. Last month the marines at Danang ran out of mosquito spray in the midst of a malarial epidemic that has forced the evacuation of 800 infected servicemen...
Hunting the Hunters. It wasn't that easy for Specialist Fifth Class Daniel Torres, 25, of Corpus Christi, Texas. A medic with Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Regiment of the Air Cav, Torres was standing by when a radioed cry for help came in from another company that had just been ambushed and decimated. Torres volunteered to go out with a rescue patrol, grabbed seven litters from MEDEVAC helicopters, and moved out. About 11 p.m. they found the wounded-some 45 men huddled around a giant anthill. On litters and on foot, 18 wounded got back. Torres searched...
...bloody fighting around Chu Pong last week, tactical air support often made the difference between victory and sheer annihilation for the hard fighting men of the 1st Air Cav. Time after time, U.S. fighter-bombers swept down in the nick of time to break up human-wave assaults by the North Vietnamese. In four days of fighting, the Air Force flew 260 sorties over the torn battleground. That was just part of a week's work for the 550 South Viet Nam-based planes that dropped more than 1,500 bombs and sprayed some 500,000 rounds...
