...Army, Navy, Marine, Air Force and Coast Guard men had been assembled; one Marine company had been flown down from Danang for the visit in jungle fatigues and camouflaged steel helmets. Forty U.S. flags fluttered along with unit flags for such fighting outfits as the 1st Air Cav, the 1st Marine and the 101st Airborne Brigade...
...usual, McNamara spent the first two days in the briefing rooms of Saigon. Then, again as usual, he climbed into khakis and scuffed brown desert boots for a two-day whirl through American units stationed all over the country. He listened to reports on Operation Irving from Air Cav officers in the central swamplands, watched A-4 Skyhawks being catapulted off the deck of the carrier Oriskany, paid brief visits to Danang, Cu Chi and the rapidly building military port of Cam Ranh Bay. But the highlight of his trip was the 3rd Marine Division's forward command post...
...Military Historian S.L.A. Marshall, the U.S. Army's Operation Paul Revere II was perhaps the major military operation of the summer in Viet Nam. Airlifted from the east coast almost to the Cambodian border in less than twelve hours, the 1st Air Cav proceeded to rout the enemy in a battle "larger than San Juan Hill and El Caney combined, bigger and more impressive than Pork Chop Hill, bloodier than Cantigny, and lasting as long as Belleau Wood."* Yet that fight, Marshall notes incredulously in the current New Leader, did not rate a single lead headline...
...battle, have 'discouraged them from mounting any attack in battalion strength or greater since March, and are finding that the badly hurt guerrillas are ever more willing to surrender. Seldom, if ever, have the Communist troops shown more willingness to drop their arms than in the 1st Air Cav's Operation Irving along the central coast, one of the most successful U.S. operations of the war (see THE WORLD). By next spring, the normal scheduled increase in U.S. strength will bring the number of troops...
High Morale. Most amazing of the Air Cav's feats has been its ability to replace itself almost entirely during the course of a year's hard combat. Only 500 of the original troops who arrived at An Khe are still on duty in Viet Nam. The rest have been rotated Stateside, many to instructors' billets at the Air Cav home base in Fort Benning, Ga., where their combat expertise is well applied. The new First Team is still 70% "regular Army"-career soldiers rather than draftees-and thus man ages to retain a solid base...
