...this: Everybody had waited all this time, weeks since "Survivor" finished taping in the Australian Outback, so CBS could do it live. Thursday night. May 3, 2001. In the studio, recreated in the image of the real Tribal Council cave, with everybody in the same exact clothes they wore that fateful last gathering all those cutting rooms ago. And Probst was there, and Colby (who had really hit the pantry in the interim), and Tina, because in the hour before (in Television Time, that is) the cowboy and the nurse had entered into some weird suicide pact...
...first and second prizes fall where they may (heck, Colby's already got a car). Two, that Colby somehow doesn't realize that whoever can get into the Final Two popular vote-off opposite Keith is a shoo-in for the grand prize. And three, nothing whatsoever. The CBS editors have burned us too many times for anything on air to be taken at face value...
...There's been more storms, more disasters, more starvation - and if CBS knows what's good for it, it'll stop riding in with care packages and food-for-shelter deals, and just let nature take its course. The downside is that the group tends to bond and put backstabbing aside when real adversity hits - the upside is that this is supposedly a survivor show, and that bonding can be a dramatic weapon. The way the remaining group fixed bitterly on Colby when the rain washed away their camp while he was off eating stew and sipping crisp, refreshing...
...this show been made for NBC or CBS, it would have been reasonable not to expect much. Critics have made much of the fact that, with the exception of “The Simpsons” and a few other cartoon shows on Fox, no other network has had much success, critical or commercial, with attempts at a prime time animated series. But whenever this point is made, the reviewer is undoubtedly forgetting “Daria,” the “Beavis and Butthead” spin-off that has consistently been one of the best, most...
