There are no real songs on this CD, by the way. They forgot to put in melodies. Only on “Flow My Tears the Spider Said” is there an inkling of variation in cadence, and unless my ears are deceiving me, they lifted it wholesale (of all things!) from an old Death Cab song...

Keb’ Mo’s new CD is called Keep It Simple, but he fails to keep his promise. Keb’ Mo’ is considered one of the foremost modern jazz guitarists, an assessment that continues to be accurate-—but in this context, it is both laudatory and critical...

...dedication to presenting those often depressing tunes in a fashion that can be understood by a new generation reared on top forty radio, but, sadly, this process sacrifices too much of the essential force behind the music. The dichotomy is clearest in the sensations he evokes; listening to his CD is not the emotional experience of the classic blues artists’ records: Simple simply doesn’t have the raw power of strong blues. He had another run-in with a metronome in that year's Disney feature "Peter Pan," where he voiced Captain Hook, and co-starred on Broadway in Cole Porter's "Can-Can"; get the original cast CD: his rendition of "If You Love Me Truly" is a cynical gem. As Dr. T. he has the film's fastest, dizziest, Seussiest song, "Do-Mi-Do Duds" ("do" and "mi" for the notes on the scale), as he dresses for what he believes is his greatest triumph...
