...CDA, as it is known by everyone who has followed its tortured history, is the controversial antiporn bill passed by Congress and signed into law last year by President Bill Clinton. The act makes it a federal crime to put online, where children might see it, not just the obscene or the pornographic but any "indecent" word or image--a prohibition so vague that it might criminalize an AIDS-awareness lesson. Proponents argue that without such strictures, any child cruising the Net would have, as Waxman told the court, "a free pass into the equivalent of every adult bookstore...
...went for an extraordinary 70 minutes that showed not just how wired this bench has become but also how important a test of constitutional principles it believes this case to be. The CDA, once feared and reviled by civil libertarians, is now seen as so flawed ("dead meat" is how Wired News described it last week) that its opponents are eagerly looking forward to a ruling. A clear judgment against it by the Supreme Court could end up extending First Amendment protection for all media into the 21st century. It could also help douse anti-Net brush fires that have...
Second, there is the accusation made by Justin Funches, manager of information services at the Crimson, that Digitas has done things in the "wrong spirit". The day after CDA was released, they called Alex Wong, Digitas President, citing the appropriation of value of the Crimson's Confi Guide. Funches eventually apologized and dropped the matter. For Funches to come back weeks later and claim again that Digitas had somehow done something that infringed on the Crimson's rights...
Finally, we would like to clarify the manner in which CDA does interact with both the CUE and Confi information. CDA is a searchable index to these webpages which is not unlike the systems provided by major web search engines like Yahoo! CDA provides links to the CUE and Confi websites, as other search engines do, and does not duplicate their content...
Digitas is an organization committed to enriching the student community through technology. We created CDA with the intent of helping students to make faster, more informed decisions about their courses. The thousands of accesses to the website is a testament to its usefulness, and we have received nothing but positive response from users. Digitas hopes to continue to offer and improve on CDA in the coming semesters. --Alex Wong '98-99, President --Ken Shan '99, Technical Director, Digitas
