Noyes enlisted as a private early in the Civil War, became a captain of the 28th Massachusetts Volunteers, and after passing through a long and active service, including Cedar Mountain, Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Battles of the Wilderness, Spottsylvania, Cold Harbor and Petersburg, was brevetted Colonel U.
