...Jobs had just led Apple on a triumphant rampage through a new market sector, portable music players, and he was looking around for more technology to conquer. He found the ideal target tech sitting on his hip. Consumers bought nearly a billion of cell phones last year, which is 10 times the number of iPods in circulation. The system, called Sync, will supposedly convert text messages to audio too. Ford plans to make it available in 12 models over the coming year, though it could be a pricey option. Like most automakers, Ford is courting digitally savvy Gen Y shoppers and hopes the technology will appeal to them in entry-level cars like the 2008 Focus...

...said. Another application of SP technology is the bioimaging of infectious organisms. In a collaborative effort among members of Harvard Medical School and Draper Laboratory, scientists are developing SP technology that would enable researchers to detect the movement of a single poliovirus through an artificial cell membrane. The new technology could act as a vaccine development tool, said Dale N. Larson, Harvard Medical School Director of the Technology and Engineering Center. The new system would make the production of new drugs cheaper and more effective by allowing researchers and pharmaceutical companies to observe the effects of new drugs early...
