...King George County, Virginia, flat, poor and sparsely settled, whites outnumber Negroes 2 to 1. As Virginia's constitution requires, education is "separate"; despite the U.S. Constitution, it is also unequal. King George High School (for whites only) is a modern, red brick building with central heating and inside toilets. King George Training School (for Negroes) is a frame building with stoves and outhouses. The white school taught chemistry, physics, biology, geometry and intermediate algebra; the Negro school had none of these subjects...

...Kirkland central kitchen is over-centralized, not from the point of view of cold monetary efficiency, but simply from judging the finished meals as lunches or dinners. The number of meals produced per employee is greater in the central kitchen, and the flavor and quality of these meals is definitely inferior. Dispensing meals can never be like building automobiles or libraries, because it is the little extras which spell the difference between good and poor meals. The quality of Dining Hall food in the five Houses attached to the central kitchen does not require poor meals. It may never rise...

But four years after he had entered Iowa Teachers, Ben had still two terms to go; he was forced to drop out during two spring terms to earn more college money. He got one term in in the fall of 1941. ...devoted there would be compensations. Talk about 'building bridges of understanding'! The Iron Curtain cuts off Russia and central Europe, but it has not yet been demonstrated that there is an Oriental Iron Curtain. Perhaps China is the one place on the globe where an imaginative church, with great experience of the land, could be a leaven able to penetrate the brittle hardtack of Communism...
