...lure away the vultures that are ever present in Kano, even on the tree-shaded grounds of Kano's Central Hotel, carrion had been dumped outside the city, and by the time the royal visitors flew in last week scarcely a bird could be seen. The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, representing their niece, Queen Elizabeth, were on their way to Kaduna to attend the biggest durbar (homage to princes) in northern Nigeria's history...
Last week the institute, part of the N.Y.U.-Bellevue Medical Center, dedicated the Enid A. Haupt Children's Garden-promptly dubbed "the Garden of Enid" by Dr. Rusk's staff. Around a central greenhouse are plots to be developed by patients of all conditions and sizes. Thanks to miniaturization, the 1959 models of Admiral, Carrier and others are 50% to 60% smaller than in 1956. General Electric claims that one of its 1959 bedroom models is virtually noiseless. Westinghouse, Fedders, Emerson are putting out install-it-your-self "portable" models. York is packaging parts needed for installation with...
...donning a grocer's apron and bringing down the cost of living. Nine years ago, with $40, he opened a stall behind his house in Landerneau, near Brest, offering staple groceries only 8% above cost. Today some 30 Leclerc-sponsored groceries are operating in Brittany, Normandy and central France, and the movement is spreading over the nation. Recently, a rumor that a Leclerc store was about to be opened in Tours dropped food prices...
