...fixed in the sky. Astronomers know, though, that this is only an illusion. The stars are moving too, floating lazily through space. At least, most of them are floating: careful observations from a land-based telescope of a star known as PSR 2224+65, in the constellation Cepheus, have revealed that this particular object is virtually shooting through the galaxy. Now 6,000 light-years from Earth and zipping along at more than 2 million m.p.h., it is going 10 times as fast as the speediest star ever seen, and 100 times as fast as most stars. At this rate...
This week, however, the Peltier comet continued to approach Earth. When first discovered it was only ten degrees from the North Star. Since then it has swung past the constellations of Cepheus and Cassiopeia in its elliptical path around the Sun. At its closest approach on Aug. 4, it will be in the constellation Aquarius, halfway from horizon to zenith in the southeastern sky. It will then be 15,800,000 mi. from Earth. Observers equipped with good field glasses or small telescopes (8-power or better) will have a fine view of the tail driven off from the comet...
With a nucleus and tail about one degree in length, the comet is located in the Constellation Cepheus through which it is rambling south and east at a rate sufficient to keep visible for some months to come...
...Cephei, a variable star of the so-called cluster type, has long been known to astronomers, but its velocity was never measured until recently. It is far too faint to be seen with the naked eye, being of the tenth magnitude. It is in the constellation Cepheus, and is 3800 light years distant from the earth, which means that the light from it which astronomers now see through their telescopes started on its journey to the earth in the time of the shepherd kings of Egypt, nearly nineteen hundred years before Christ. That distance is only a small fraction...
