...quiet, intense man who commutes between M.I.T. and the giant particle accelerator at the European Nuclear Research Center (CERN) in Geneva, Switzerland, where he is now conducting experiments, Ting was not surprised at the news of his award. The discovery of the J particle, he says frankly, was "revolutionary." Brooklyn-born Richter. who plays squash to keep his weight under control, took his sudden fame philosophically. Says he of his discovery: "I see no immediate practical application of this discovery except in improving the understanding of the universe." But he also remembers that Lord Rutherford, the great British physicist...

Energy Bonus. For their new machine, CERN's planners adopted an ingenious strategy. After being accelerated in the usual way in CERN's 28-BeV synchrotron, protons are deflected with powerful magnets into two large concentric rings. Particles are sent alternately in clockwise and counterclockwise directions in the interlaced vacuum tunnels (see diagram, previous page). The result is two opposing beams of protons, each packing a wallop of 28 BeV, which can meet nearly head-on at eight different points where the rings intersect. In those collisions between protons, both particles can be made to come virtually...

...economizing technique has now been put to work by imaginative scientists of the 12-nation European nuclear research center (CERN) outside Geneva. It is incorporated in a remarkable, new and relatively low cost ($80 million) atom smasher called ISR (for Intersecting Storage Rings) that has broken all existing energy records...

John W. Black, manager of the Saks University Shop, expressed little con-cern yesterday over the issues raised by NECBGS or the planned boycott of his store. "To be sure, the people in the minority classes can push a wheelbarrow and move trash, but that doesn't mean they can fill skilled jobs," Black said. He doubted that his customers, mostly college students, would respect the picket lines...

Detective Story. The circumstances were obscene. At sunrise on March 10, Masaryk's body was found in the courtyard of the Cernín Palace. He was in pajamas, barefoot. He lay on his back a yard from the open bathroom window 30 feet above. He seemed to have landed on his feet, for both legs were broken at the ankles, the heels shattered, the stumps protruding and bits of bone strewn over the cobbles. His hands were scuffed, and the fingernails had paint or plaster beneath them...
