Menstrual extraction is essentially a vacuum-aspiration method in which the fertilized egg, if present, and the uterine lining are withdrawn by means of a tube inserted through the cervix. It differs significantly, however, from similar procedures performed in clinics in New York and other states where abortion is legal. Vacuum aspiration, as usually done, requires dilation of the cervix under local anesthesia. Menstrual extraction requires little or no dilation in most cases. Instead, a thin (diameter: 4 mm.), flexible plastic tube, or cannula, is inserted through the cervix and into the uterus, and most of the uterine lining...

...Cancer of the inner lining of the uterus (the endometrium) can usually be cured if it is diagnosed early enough. But that is a big if. The simple Pap smear, which is effective for detecting cancer of the cervix (neck of the uterus), cannot always pick up endometrial cancer. Dilatation and curettage, used to obtain cells from the uterine lining for analysis, requires hospitalization and is impractical unless the disease is already suspected. By then it may be too late; endometrial cancer kills about 3,500 American women a year. The Gravlee Jet Washer, a new device now being marketed...

Earlier Detection. Viruses and virus-like particles have also been found in other forms of human cancer-in the breast, cervix and lymphatic system, for instance. But scientists thus far have been unable to determine whether any of these particles could cause cancer; this is what sets the new find apart from earlier ones and makes scientists hopeful of further progress. "If this proves to be a true human virus," says Dr. Robert Huebner of the National Cancer Institute's viral carcinogenesis branch, "it will mean that we're light-years ahead of where we've been...

...Vacuum aspiration, used on most outpatients, is a new variation on the D. and C. method that makes abortion even easier. Performed only through the twelfth week of pregnancy, the operation consists of dilating the cervix, inserting a metal tube attached to a small vacuum pump and drawing off the fetal matter into a bottle. Discomfort during the five-minute operation, which often includes a quick curettage, is minimal. Pain is all but eliminated in a refinement of vacuum aspiration developed by Harvey Karman, a Los Angeles psychologist: for pregnancies of less than ten weeks' duration, doctors...
