...this were all there was to Wedding in Blood, it would hardly be more than routine. Films depicting crimes of passion proliferate, only very few show any signs of brilliance. Fortunately, there is much, much more to Chabrol's masterful effort, and the movie manage sto become a stunning intellectual and emotional experience. Wedding is, in the end, a work of incredible depth--a depth that is all too hard to find in motion pictures today...
WEDDING IN BLOOD. Two married lovers (Stephane Audran, Michel Piccoli) are driven by their shared need and the transports of passion to commit murder. This woebegone plot, written and directed by the sometimes masterly Claude Chabrol (Le Boucher), needs all the voltage it can stand. From Chabrol and his stars, it gets only a few anemic charges. The paramours are intrepidly bourgeois, their longing for each other so squalidly selfish and narcissistic that every time they paw each other they seem to be polishing a mirror. They lavish the sort of affection and attention on each other that...
JUST BEFORE NIGHTFALL is Director Claude Chabrol's cunningly engineered fable about a man (Michel Bouquet) who strangles his mistress and is slowly enveloped by guilt. He blurts out a confession to his wife, who understands; he tells his best friend, who is similarly sympathetic. The fact that his friend was also his mistress's husband only adds a little piquancy to the situation. Awash in forgiveness, the hapless killer has only one logical object for his mounting horror and self-loathing. His home, all glass and chrome and odd, abrupt angles, makes a suitably antiseptic moral landscape...
...Paris, Actress Elsa Martinelli, wearing black opera hose, ran a couple of baby chimps through their paces. Dressed up as a bunny, Singer Jane Birkin popped out of a cake and walked a tightrope. The hit of the evening was a pie-throwing skit written by Director Claude Chabrol and starring Actor Marcello Mastroianni. Marcello then scrubbed himself down and returned for the 3 a.m. finale when the whole company dished up a giant vat of steaming spaghetti for the audience...
