Problems with the potentially invaluable Babe franchise are the last thing Universal needs. The studio has been in turmoil for months, firing a number of top executives and misfiring with a number of expensive films, including Primary Colors and Mercury Rising. Late last week came reports that Universal Studios chairman Frank Biondi was out of the top job. Adding insult to injury, the aborted Babe benefit had been arranged by Biondi's wife. Universal made a contribution to the Defense Fund. Now it has to hope that Miller can turn Babe from a sow's ear into a silk purse...

As his committee oversaw a grumpy hearing of dueling historians, all debating the question of just what is an impeachable offense, Hyde sighed into his microphone, "God, I'd like to forget all of this." Then he pulled himself together and allowed that Congress had a constitutional duty to go forward anyway...
Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's outburst last week -- threatening to renew the intifada and warning Israel "our rifles are ready" -- seemed strange, given that the Knesset was debating a controversial land transfer to the Palestinian Authority. The ferocious rhetoric, says the source...

Instead, the unrest was the culmination of a feud between the Palestinian Authority's military intelligence, run by Musa Arafat, the chairman's cousin, and members of Fatah, Arafat's faction in the Palestine Liberation Organization. Musa Arafat's men had ransacked a Fatah office, and the provocation touched off a furious response, fed by growing frustration with the Palestinian Authority, which has a record of torture, blackmail and rampant corruption...
This is not coincidence. GE is arguably America's best-run large enterprise, and under its charismatic chairman, Jack Welch, it has moved aggressively to position itself as a truly global corporation while pursuing every available strategy to boost profitability and shareholder value. While few investors would argue with GE's corporate strategy or its success, it is fair to question the government's continued use of taxes from the rest of us to make GE's hefty profits even greater...
