...wrong, a satanic mockery of a Bach chorale, and countless other musical japes in the story of a soldier who sells his soul to the Devil, wins it back and finally loses it again. The Prokofiev is also dramatic, originally composed for a ballet about a circus. The Moscow Chamber Ensemble, led by Gennedy Rozhdestvensky, has just the right touch for both: cool, brusque, almost offhandish virtuosity...

With a sudden surge, the members of East Germany's Volkskammer (People's Chamber) sprang to their feet. As the country's Communist ruler, spike-bearded Walter Ulbricht, 73, looked on, the 434 Deputies thus signaled their unanimous approval of a new law that aims at making the division of Germany a spiritual as well as a physical reality. Into East Germany's law books last week went a statute giving the 17 million people under Ulbricht's rule a new citizenship in "the first peace-loving, democratic, socialist German state...

...Antonio takes its cleanup effort seriously, carries a volunteer program sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and run on an annual budget of just $6,000. The chamber, of course, has no police power, but it prodded property owners to tidy up unsightly lots, encouraged Boys' Clubs members to move in on cluttered areas with flour sacks for trash, and ran a regular school program on beautification with films and 15-minute lectures. To be sure, on Spring Weekend, Finley's boys play at cricket and bowls in the courtyard, and the excellent House Chamber Music Society performs woodwind and trumpet concerti on the lawn. Apart from Finley, however, the House seems tame and ordinary. There is no literary magazine, drama review, seminar program, serious artistic production--not even a psychedelic light show-dance happening. Instead, the House Committee sponsors a movie series which includes such favorites as Bad Day at Black Rock and The Americanization of Emily. Even the number of preppies has been vastly exaggerated...
