...Yale we must row in any case; with Columbia and Cornell probably. Suppose that Yale, Columbia, and Cornell were all to beat us; this would not affect our rowing Oxford, but we could not then go as "champions," on which so many seem to insist. A race for the "championship," while a very desirable thing, is by no means essential, as Oxford was not challenged to row the "champion" American crew, but simply Harvard University. This is the reason of our "indifference" about the Cornell and Columbia race. Cornell has everything to gain and nothing to lose; with...

ATHLETICS.Amateur Ten-Miles. - An amateur championship belt for this distance has been offered by the Boston Y. M. C. A. Athletic Club, and is open to New England amateurs only. If there were only some man in this University who would make the attempt to win this belt for Harvard, we are sure he would be encouraged by all in college who are interested in athletics. The feeling that it is not "quite the thing" to enter amateur races never influences men who are anxious to compare their strength with that of men other than those they have beaten...

...have been offered by the boat-clubs named; and the Association is now in correspondence with the different colleges that are interested in rowing. The scheme, though ridiculed by some, seems to us a praiseworthy one. The system of an intercollegiate association, introducing an annual regatta for the "college championship," and deciding the character of this regatta according to the expense involved, or the preferences of a minority of the college world, has been proved conclusively a failure. It is desirable, however, that the crews of American colleges should meet occasionally and measure blades, and for this purpose...

...sorry to hear that Harvard's challenge to Yale to row a race for the single-scull championship has been declined. The reason alleged was, "that it would establish a bad precedent, and tend to lessen the interest in the eight-oared race." This certainly seems rather a foolish idea, for one would think that if a Freshman race and a single-scull race could be arranged between the two colleges, to come off at the same time with the "Varsity," it would rather increase than diminish the interest. But as the H. U. B. C. offered...

...July 13, 1878, quarter-mile handicap, with 18 yards, beaten 3 yards, by 58 1/4 sec.; and in final, beaten 5 yards, in 54 1/2 sec.; September 28, quarter-mile handicap, with 24 yards, won trial heat in 54 sec., and final in 52 3/6 sec.; October 12, at championship meeting, beaten 10 yards, by 54 8/8 sec., coming in fifth in field of seven. By no possible manipulation of figures can this man be reckoned better than 55 sec., and he is at least 25 yards behind champion form, yet he is put on scratch in a race...
