...sleek blue and white Soviet IL-62 jet descended circling out of the hazy blue sky, touched down lightly and taxied toward a welcoming band of West German officials led by Chancellor Willy Brandt. Black, gold and red West German flags and red and gold Soviet banners snapped in the breeze as the guard of honor clicked to attention, steel-tipped black boots at the prescribed 45-degree angle. Soviet Party Chief Leonid Brezhnev strode down the steps, shook hands with Brandt and stood at attention as a Bundeswehr band played the two nations' anthems...
...purpose and timing of Leonid Brezhnev's historic five-day visit this week to Bonn, the first ever by a Soviet leader to West Germany. In the Russian view, the improving relations between Moscow and Bonn can only be further improved by Brezhnev's talks with Chancellor Willy Brandt. Late last week Kiesinger watched his party go down to defeat as the Bundestag backed by a 51-vote margin Brandt's treaty with East Germany...
...urinal, throwing objectivity out the window, junking any semblance of "off-the-record," refusing to repress an obvious bias (pro-McGovern), and drawing no line at the point where the facts ended and his imaginative insanity began. For example, he gets into some very heavy slander: NBC's John Chancellor (who he seems to like) is a "dope-addled fascist bastard," Muskie is "a bonehead who steals his best lines from old Nixon speeches," and Hubert Humphrey is a "treacherous, gutless old ward-heeler who should be put in a goddamn bottle and sent out with the Japanese current...
