...love bubbly, then a trip to the Champagne region of France--about an hour-plus train ride from Paris--is worth the jaunt. But be forewarned: the climate can be lousy. I was as chilled as a glass of Blanc de Blanc while visiting one of Moet & Chandon's vineyards near Epernay in July. The generally crummy weather is considered one of the key ingredients besides the area's chalky, bone-white soil that help this region of France produce the best of bubbly...
Something new has been bubbling up in champagne. Rather than just selling grapes to the big champagne houses like Moet & Chandon or Perrier-Jouet, more and more small growers in the Champagne region of France are making wines of their own. These handcrafted artisan champagnes, which have been arriving on U.S. shores in discernible numbers since the mid-'90s, have caught on with sophisticated champagne lovers, and sales have tripled in the past three years...
...school spirit that "normal" colleges experience, we have one word: BORING! If ass-numbing cold and nosebleed seats will fullfill you, then Harvard/Yale is for you, chump. (P.S., don't think that the tailgate party out the back of the Mercedes M-class is for you; the Moet & Chandon is legit and so are watercrackers. Only alums actually get piece this weekend...

Despite almost $60 million in profits last year on turnover of around $460 million, Moet & Chandon, the largest producer, announced last May that 245 employees would be laid off for economic reasons -- the first time in living memory that the industry had shrunk its work force. Then, in June, Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton, which owns Moet, announced 457 layoffs. An employee backlash has since forced the producers to rethink their cost-cutting strategy, and a regional labor court ruled in August that employees cannot be fired summarily. But the pressure to reduce costs is still...
...says Roland Vella, who manages a Nicolas liquor store on the Rue Rambuteau in Paris. Instead of paying the usual $26.50 for a bottle of Mumm's top-of-the-line Cordon Rouge, Vella's customers can buy one for $23.70. Anticipating this year's 250th company anniversary, Moet & Chandon last year even offered two free champagne glasses to anyone who bought two bottles of medium-priced Brut Imperial. Less expensive brands are also being heavily discounted, with the result that sales are showing signs of recovery -- perhaps as much as a 6.7% increase for the first half...
