Polish has its place, however, and Chang-rae Lee's majestic, moving novel Aloft (Riverhead; 343 pages) reminds us why. The hero of Aloft is Jerry Battle: 59, semi-retired after a long and successful career as a landscaper, with money to burn and the world on a string. Jerry works part time at a travel agency, but just to keep busy. His handsome son runs the family business; his lovely daughter is getting married. For kicks he takes his little three-seater Cessna up to fly around in circles over suburban Long Island. Life is swell...
...That's where the real difficulties began. With SARS at full strength during the filming last spring, Chang had to hurry to capture a cameo spot by Tony Leung Ka-fai to avoid the quarantine measures Taiwan was about to impose on travelers from Hong Kong. When Chang wanted to shoot a scene at Taipei's airport, officials allowed in only 50 cast and crew members?a paltry number to simulate an airport throng. "I was thinking maybe a flight would come in, and there could be people in the background," Chang says. "But all the flights were canceled...
...that Chang shows her years. Effortlessly elegant in black leather pants and a purple Dior sweater, Chang looks like she could play 20, 30 or 40, evergreen in an industry where some actresses are washed up while they're still in pigtails. Though she just hit the half-century mark last July, she demurs at the thought of a 30:40:50. "I don't like sequels," Chang says. "There's so much more I can do." Slowing down isn't on her list...
