...lately God has been replaced by something even less substantial. The Committee of Inquiry, another "student-faculty" Committee, was set up this Fall to hear complaints against the Administration and to channel these complaints to the proper administrators. In the words of its chairman, Roger Rosenblatt, Acting Master of Dunster House and one of the original members of the Committee of Fifteen, it is meant "to take the jargon out of communication." Mr. Rosenblatt has not yet indicated with what the committee plans to replace the jargon. At any rate, this jargonless Committee is also powerless. It is intended only...
...development of Cable TV will almost certainly result-to some degree at least-in the decentralization of television. Systems like the 42-channel installation in San Jose have the potential to change the function of television entirely. No longer do the channels have to be dominated by commercial programming. A cable station could be operated by technicians with programming controlled by the public. A staff could be set up to teach citizens groups who would like to make their own programs. Educational and vocational instruction could be given by television. And citizens could monitor the functions of the government rather...
...hours for local live origination....We adhere to the judgment that it is appropriate to afford a period of free experimentation and innovation by cable operators. However, there is one development which does require consideration. While the cable operator is perfectly free to enter into arrangements with local broadcast stations during the period of experimentation....the main purpose is to provide an outlet...
Still upset by the 1969 Santa Barbara Channel blowout, which discharged 336,000 gallons of crude oil, Californians faced an even worse spill last week. This time two Standard Oil of California tankers collided in dense fog under Golden Gate Bridge and drifted helplessly into San Francisco Bay. With a 40-ft. gash in her hull, the Oregon Standard gushed 1,000,000 gallons of bunker fuel oil that soon coated beaches and wildlife sanctuaries for 50 miles of the coast. Some people were so incensed at Standard Oil that they hurled plastic bags full of oil at the company...
...Gulf, her crewmen were routinely spray cleaning her empty oil tanks with jets of sea water. For no apparent reason, an explosion ripped through the hull, sending the brand-new ship to the bottom. Two weeks later, an oil hold of the supertanker Mactra blew up in the Mozambique Channel; next day a blast blew apart the Kong Haakon VII off Liberia. Last summer there were two more tanker explosions. Scientists and oilmen were at a loss for an explanation...
