...clarify than Kennedy, since they were presumably lucid when Kennedy returned to the cottage dazed from his accident. Not the least of the mysteries is why the two lawyers failed to summon help immediately, report the crash to the police, and later supposedly permitted Kennedy to swim the channel to Edgartown alone. That swim is all the more incredible because both men are among Ted's oldest friends. Markham and Joey Gargan, Ted's cousin, attended prep school together, and it was through Gargan that Markham became a regular member of Kennedy touch-football squads...
...that such works as his Pulitzer prize-winning Second String Quartet (1959) and the Double Concerto for Piano and Harpsichord (1961) were initially written with stereo in mind. In the dense antiphonal Double Concerto, for example, each solo instrument is set off against the other - one to a stereo channel - and each has its accompanying coterie of winds and strings. The resulting dialogue is almost Joycean in its plural textures and moment-to-moment subtleties. Recording studios also offer new technical means of composing, through such devices as the echo chamber, multi-track recording and tape superimposition. "In this...
...returned to the hotel. As anyone who has taken a lifesaving course can testify, swimming and diving are very difficult with shoes on. Senator Kennedy, after suffering a concussion and in a state of shock, claims to have dived repeatedly to the sunken car and then swum the channel. This would have been difficult for an experienced swimmer, but incredible for a man in his condition, wearing a back brace and all his clothes. If he was also wearing shoes, it would be unbelievable...
Doubtful Swim. Columnist Anderson's claim that Kennedy did not, in fact, go to Edgartown alone after the accident seems more plausible. It is almost unthinkable that Joe Gargan and Lawyer Paul Markham would stand by while Kennedy plunged into the 500-ft. channel, his back in a brace and his mind in a daze. It seems more likely that Markham and Gargan "borrowed" a small boat from a pier some 200 yds. from the ferry landing and rowed Kennedy to the Edgartown side. According to this theory, Markham and Kennedy walked to the Senator's room...
...they had had to drink. But it is problematic whether such a hearing could legally consider some of the larger lacunae in Kennedy's account. Why did Gargan and Markham not report the accident and why did they permit Kennedy, clothed and presumably dazed, to plunge into the channel to swim from Chappaquiddick to Martha's Vineyard? Was Kennedy trying to establish an alibi when he appeared fully and dryly clothed before a hotelman in Edgartown and pointedly asked the time...
