Gentlemen is set around A.D. 950 in a politically chaotic region of the Caucasus mountains. Our heroes are two rootless adventurers: Amram, a massive Abyssinian axman, and Zelikman, a pale, painfully skinny Frank (a kind of proto-German) who dresses in all black and carries a surgical instrument as a weapon. They are fast friends, seasoned brawlers and amateur philosophers given to terse exchanges of melancholy wit. They resemble--as all couples who stay together long enough ultimately do--Vladimir and Estragon from Waiting for Godot...

Dispatches from the road are equally enthusiastic. "We stayed in a wonderful if chaotic new hotel called Vivenda, run by a brother-and-sister team, Charlotte and Simon Hayward, whom we loved meeting," wrote Amanda Deitsch Hochman in her online journal on her four-month journey through India, Southeast Asia and Japan with her husband and two young children. ...statistics don't give a sense of the chaotic scene on the ground during the marathon. Beyond the very real challenges posed by the weather, the problems included a communication breakdown between event organizers and competitors, a water shortage that left novices dangerously dehydrated, and a wave of anger among experienced runners over the decision to cancel the event when some were as little as a mile away from the finish line...

...drafted into the SS, the fanatical branch of Adolf Hitler's army -although by the time he took up arms, the war was all but over. (He writes, credibly, that he never actually fired a shot.) Grass's memoir describes in detail the conditions he encountered in the chaotic retreat before the advancing Red Army in the closing months of the war. But the revelation of his SS affiliation came as a shock to Grass's admirers in Germany and elsewhere, because he had so unstintingly criticized his fellow Germans for failing to confront their culpability in the Nazi...
