...that's the Charming Street Urchin face. It's part of his helpless act: he throws himself upon your mercy. He's got a half-dozen faces for the ladies. But the one I like, the really cute one [and here J.J.s voice grows flintier], is the quick, dependable chap. Nothing he won't do for you in a pinch - so he says. Mr. Falco, whom I did not invite to sit at this table tonight, is a hungry press agent, and fully up to all the tricks of his very slimy trade. [He pulls out a cigarette and turns...
...That all seems a long time ago now," says General Lue Ye-tien, Tuan's former right-hand man. Tuan died in 1980 but Lue still cuts a sprightly figure at 85 and relishes the peace of his twilight years after a lifetime of fighting. A towering chap with a ramrod back and a vaguely wintery air, he retains a formidable presence even as he potters about the twisting rows of tea bushes swaddling the slopes below his Chinese-style villa. ...profession is a car crash, you understand the abundance of attitude that has made Street one of the dominant personalities in skiing for much of the past decade. The tart-tongued confidence that has both alienated fellow skiers and helped earn lucrative endorsements from the likes of Nike and Chap Stick was forged during her childhood in tiny Triumph, Idaho (pop. 50). Engagement followed their second meeting; "he looked like a good chap," she says, laughing. She frames her American experience as a shedding of limiting Indian assumptions for a liberating Islamic understanding. Her upbringing taught women "to take care of our husbands." But as she studied the Koran with several (female) teachers here, "I learned more and more about my rights as a woman. I don't do the housework now because I have...
Were it not for Thornton's brilliantly whiny portrayal of a man who knows too much medicine for his own good, Troy Garity (Jane Fonda's kid) might have stolen the picture. He plays the bandits' wheelman, a none-too-bright chap who dreams of becoming a stunt man and occasionally practices the craft by setting fire to himself. He's terrific, but finally Bandits works as a sweetly loony ensemble piece, a sort of cracked romance that's typical of director Barry Levinson at his shrewd but unpretentious best...
