Canny, articulate and not reliant on charisma, Howard has been an indestructible force in Australian politics. As recently as 1989, his own party thought him unelectable and dumped him as leader. But since 1996, he's won four elections for the Liberal-National Coalition, twice pulling it back from the brink of defeat. He's left behind a trail of defeated Labor Party leaders, becoming in the process a hero of conservatives across the Western world...

...candidates would navigate their way out of this loaded question. It was nothing short of theatrical. Sadly, all the important issues following this melodrama lost their poignancy. From the troop buildup in Iraq to energy issues, the candidate with the best response was the simply one with the most charisma. ...observer called a "saint hunt." It will not play as well with others who have grown increasingly frustrated at the opulent lifestyles of the televangelists. In any case, maintaining a friend's innocence allows Huckabee to continue to access a part of the media important to Republican hopefuls. Charisma's editor, J. Lee Grady, was slightly amused that anyone would think Copeland would be a burden on Huckabee. "Number one," he says, "Just because Grassley's investigating Copeland doesn't mean Huckabee thinks he's guilty. And number two, Huckabee is courting so many different camps, he's gonna...
