...Jean, the valet, Eugene Gervasi gives an attractive, albeit uneven, performance. The obvious charm which Strindberg has poured into the character is visible, in Gervasi's rendering, but the cultivated polish and the sinister selfishness underneath are not. Nevertheless, when the script offers him a sharp line, Gervasi delivers it with grace and a fine sense of timing...

Poet Paul Verlaine was the youngest of four children-the three others, stillborn, were kept pickled in bottles by their doting mother. This might have dispirited Paul; instead, he grew to manhood with a sunny nature and an easy-breezy charm. Far from being rebellious, he always obeyed instantly-particularly when ordered by his instincts. At about 16 he discovered brothels, and thought them so sensible and wonderful that he never wearied of visiting them. Soon afterwards he discovered alcohol, took to it with the same enthusiasm. Happily, Composer Aden's score, here modestly intricate, there suddenly lyrical, has more individual appeal and island charm than routine tropical heat. The entertaining lyrics in Jamaica are never once belted out, nor are the tunes whistled afterwards in the lobby. A show so lightly strummed, so insouciantly strutted, so frilled and beflowered needs to be stylish. Jack Cole's pictorial dances, Oliver Smith's airy sets. Miles White's gorgeous costumes give it style. If it has almost no Broadway snap, it has even less Broadway brassiness. If this is a Jamaica with little ginger...
