...Lithgow's J.J. is a plausible bad guy, though less potent than Lancaster's. Lithgow, his soft lankiness worlds removed from Lancaster's coiled muscularity, puts surface charm on the scoundrel. He smiles, he effuses, he sings. This J.J. enjoys his venality, his sacred-monstrosity (it's good to be the king of the night); Lancaster's J.J. is rigid, watchful, a calculating machine, a new species - the prototype post-human. Something in Lithgow's J.J. wants to be loved, whereas Lancaster's J.J. simply is what he does. (Motivation? That's for infomercial spielers.) The difference...

...result has been to make Klee look both omnipresent and rather a whimsical bore. He has to be rediscovered every so often to wipe away the resentment the kiddies (now grown up) feel against his charm, wit, flyaway fantasy and all the rest. He is forever going out of style and then being dragged back into it by this or that exhibition. If she wins, there's nothing to preclude Al from running for President in '04. Ted Kennedy served in the Senate while brother John was in the White House. Meanwhile, even if she doesn't run, Tipper's only brought more attention to political spouses. After this week...

Abdullah's leaking of a peace initiative to the New York Times was plainly part of a well-plotted charm campaign to improve Saudi Arabia's image in the light of its connections to Sept. 11. But the proposition has generated enormous attention worldwide, far exceeding the expectations of the Saudis themselves. Abdullah's offering is simple: he proposes that all the Arab countries state in advance that they will make peace with Israel if Israel relinquishes the lands it conquered in the 1967 war--that is, if it returns the Golan Heights to Syria and hands over the West...

...bladers fizz through its parks, students and locals with time to talk and money to spend fill the cafés and clubs, posters tell of a vibrant arts scene. But up near the Old Town, in the shadow of the gothic St. Laurent Church, the tolerance and discreet charm of the Lausannois has been stretched to the snapping point lately by scores of African asylum seekers peddling cocaine on its ancient, narrow streets...
