Nelson Gidding's "Act With The Stars" and John Bonner's "The Boy-Girl Relationship" attract because they have a charm and lack of pretension that is missing from some of the other stories. Most of Mother Advocate's sons know better, but some of them seem unable to resist looking back over their shoulder at the devil of pseudo-sophistication. Two of the other three short stories, by William Abrahams and Martin Collins Johnson, slip at different moments into this fault. The third, Edward Pols' "Porphyro and the Beadsman," is a tedious attempt at a difficult mental portrait which...
...find it by playing around with Ed Wynn's "Boys and Girls Together." Or, more particularly, with Ed Wynn himself, who is the show, the whole show, and a perfect fool in the process. On the radio he may be pretty bad, but on the boards he has the charm of Mickey Rooney, and ordinary people can only wonder how a man can stand, practically alone, on a stage for three hours, talking and waving his arms feebly, and never letting his audience down for an uninterrupted breath...

This year he announced a method for mass production of a typhus vaccine...

Walter O'Keefe, a New York comedian, arrived in town to organize a Republican committee with bright-eyed Robert Montgomery as chairman. Democratic National Committeewoman Helen Gahagan (songstress wife of Melvyn Douglas) was rounding up Roosevelt votes with the help of sinister Edward G. Robinson, serene Douglas Fairbanks Jr. National defense got its call with the arrival...
...Roosevelt before 1932 and by natural selection became a U. S. diplomat. Tall, leathery Mr. Cudahy had previously studied and practiced law, run his family's real-estate properties in Milwaukee, hunted big game, fought gallantly in World War I, written expansive prose about his adventures. Blessed with charm, a warm heart and full pockets, Mr. Cudahy in Poland, Eire and Belgium proved a better than average amateur diplomat. His friends and superiors in the State Department never charged him with stupidity, on the other hand never credited him with great profundity...
