...know. The mere mention of such establishments incites spasms of head-shaking and jowl-flapping among a certain hoary, wheezing segment of the Harvard and Cambridge community. The sticks-in-the-mud dredge up the same tired claim that bringing in large, proven businesses will sully the Harvard Square charm, that they will stain the Harvard University image...
...crowds are smiling? It is because they are young and fresh, as yet unexposed to the daily grind that being a tough sonofabitch requires. The faces of the audience are wrinkled and droopy, hardened by years of not being the last-finishing nice guy, and these charming young men are naive, even as they sing of "sadomasochism," to the real tensions that will someday entangle their own lives. It is refreshing for these corporate clients, seeking to cut loose and shed a little of their hostility over wine or vodka, to see that life can still be fun without...
...despite the collective wrangling of Sweeney, Bill Clinton and Gore himself, 2.2 million of Gore?s 13 million new friends are sending just that message. Equally funny is the short episode in which Evian visits Sky's house to apologize, showcasing Will Ferrel's bufoonish charm. Parochial school jokes are few, but sometimes memorable. Note the sponsors on the banners announcing the student talent competition. And there are all of Mary Katherine's usual quirks--sticking her hands under her armpits, her movie-of-the-week monologues, and her agitated, "Hi, I'm Mary Katherine Gallagher...
...apply less universally than the law of the fluke. Blair Witch was a cunning fluke; Happy, Texas is just the kind of smart, communal comedy (The Opposite of Sex, Happiness, Election, Go) to which the mass film audience has shown serial resistance. Yet here you will find an easy charm, a cleverly unforced sense of humor and a benignity toward all its genially oddball characters that Hollywood would do well to emulate. If moviegoers skip this one, they'll be missing a real treat...
