...cuts the deck to an ace (repeatedly). Jay even pulls out reputedly the oldest of magician’s tools—the cup and balls. Yet Ricky Jay & His 52 Assistants is far more than a magic show, it is a theatrical experience blessed with wit and genuine charm. Kassovitz does the same for his role, helping Nino’s earnest charm overshadow his seedy lifestyle. In fact, Nino is often the film’s most likeable character; for all of Amélie’s shy allure, she seems aggravatingly out of touch with the reality around her. The large supporting cast is just as stellar, providing a neighborhood full of eccentric foils for Amélie’s do-gooding. Needless to say, with Pidgeon’s film career so active, it has become difficult for theater audiences to see her back on the stage, especially in the Boston area. As one theatergoer commented, it would be worth it to watch her read the phone book...
