...show opens with a burst of well-directed energy which carries the first few scenes with reasonable crispness. Animation leaps from the opening number, a mock funeral for the tyrannical and bigoted Ol' Cap'n Cotchipee (Christopher Charron); the actors bounce cheerfully through the rather simplistic choreography, though the Old Library stage affords little room for 20 dancers to swing. Things seem fine through the establishment of a few basic plot premises...

...Gishes both gave creditable performances--Lillian as Miss Madrigal and Dorothy as Mrs. St. Maugham--although they seemed somehow reluctant to lose themselves in their parts and to forget that after all, they are the Gishes. Lillian especially kept the passions within her a little too well hidden. Charron Follett, as the excitable, Gigi-like Laurel, had a part which could easily have been overplayed, but she handled it very well. O. Z. Whitehead was stiff at first but afterwards quite engaging as the butler. Only Frances Ingalls, as Laurel's young mother, was much too unsure of herself...

In Paris, he enchanted the café set with a series of brilliant parties at a little bistro in the Rue Pierre Charron. But when detectives, spurred on by the travel agency, in Birmingham, arrived to check up on "the gay Englishman." he had disappeared. The travel agency did not say why they wanted Morton-Stewart, only that they were "most anxious to trace him." It was not hard. Soon afterward he checked into Rome's Hotel Excelsior as Horace Albert...
