...whispered that the Austrian-born Bloch was not only a Communist spy but also an Austrian lackey: as deputy chief of the American mission in Vienna, he had argued against barring Austrian President Kurt Waldheim from the U.S. A Viennese newspaper chimed in that Bloch was also a skirt chaser: police in Vienna interviewed a call girl with whom he had had a "friendship" for several years. In New York City Ronald Lauder, a former U.S. Ambassador to Austria and now a Republican candidate for mayor, claimed he had so distrusted Bloch that he had him fired. Lauder backed down...

...sitcom, but it surely restocks it with human-scale humor. Judd Hirsch stars as a divorced schoolteacher gingerly exploring the single life. On his first visit to a singles group, he meets a sly assemblage of oddballs, including a group leader fixated on sex and a hilariously sleazy skirt chaser (Jere Burns doing Dan Aykroyd's E. Buzz Miller). Executive producer Ed. Says Wayne County Sheriff Robert Ficano: "He would try to win the confidence of victims' families, and then say, 'I have this friend who is an attorney...

...phone service has cranked birding competition up a notch. Sandy Komito, 55, owner of a construction company in Haledon, N.J., blames Odear for turning him into a chaser. "Before Bob started the service in January of 1985, I was relatively passive," he says. Komito says he hunts rarities by tacking on a day or two of birding to a legitimate business trip. But when the ruddy ground dove was reported in Texas last November, he was there the next day, with no business trip as an excuse. He expects to fly 300,000 miles on birding trips this year...
