Ishmael Reed was born in Chattanooga in 1938 and grew up in Buffalo, New York, where he dropped out of the university because he wasn't interested in being a "slave to somebody else's reading list." There has been little apparent pattern to the fires, which have struck at a variety of denominations and at churches with both black and white congregations.
