...Parents in Britain have long held "chicken pox parties" at the beginning of summer so that children could catch the disease at a convenient time. But recent chatter on various Internet sites has health officials worried that parents are planning similar events for swine flu in order to make their children immune to the virus should it mutate into a more lethal form. In a statement on Tuesday, Sir Liam Donaldson, Britain's Chief Medical Officer, said such parties were the result of "seriously flawed thinking." (See pictures of swine flu hitting Mexico...

...world luminaries into the city for “Vernissage,” the opening week of parties, private viewings, and prize-giving. This period has the effect of overwhelming those who can just barely fathom the city’s permanent artistic highlights. So, even without the incessant chatter and social whirlwinds that begin the Biennale, a water-bound escape to the Cimitero would benefit anyone who feels relentlessly confronted by visual masterpieces and glories. ...Transport options from Bangkok include a 47-mile (76 km) ride on monotonous highways; a float by on a tourist boat with buffets and chatter out of Stuttgart or Indiana; or a two-hour train chug that quickly stops being quaint. Commuters toting guitars and mangoes are charming, but the carriage is grimy and the trackside views uninspiring. Yet Ayutthaya provides an eye-cleansing surplus of green after days in Bangkok's concrete maze (at admission prices that, while annoyingly higher for foreigners, are still minimal by world standards). Its sculptures and chedi ooze grandeur, not rot. And the Chao...
