...programming is excellent and its performing solid. Bach Soc does not disappoint this year, either. Roy Kogan, a fine soloist who excelled last season, plays Schumann's Piano Concerto in October, Jennie Shames appears in the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto, and the rest of the year includes Britten, Mahler, Chausson and some workhorse Beethoven. Bach doesn't figure in much, but that's the paradox of this orchestra -- it's supposed to play the Brandenburgs, but instead bombards you with great nineteenth and twentieth century pieces...
...instrumental soloists in Weber's Bassoon Concerto in F Major, Hindemith's Viola Concerto "Der Schwarendreher," and Berlioz's "Les Nuits d'Ete." Both free concerts are at the School of Music Concert Hall, 855 Comm. Ave., Boston. Call 353-3345 for more details...

...Peyer, clarinet: Gerard Schwarz, trumpet; Columbia: $6.98). Two brilliant young American-born singers team up with a superior set of instrumentalists in a glowing recital of vocal music. The mood shifts in a varied repertory that encompasses Schumann's playful duet Das Glück as well as Chausson's haunting Chanson Perpetuelle, sung with grave beauty by Von Stade. Blegen's supple trills whirl with Gerard Schwarz's bright trumpet through Alessandro Scarlatti's aria Se geloso e il mio core...
