...American carriers on the New York-to-London run, Pan Am and TWA, intend to announce their own plans for Skytrain-cheap travel soon, perhaps next week. The plans will be closely scrutinized by other airlines, especially those flying the hotly competitive North Atlantic routes, where four out of ten seats are empty on an average scheduled flight. Though neither Pan Am's nor TWA's packages will be identical to Laker's, they will both offer just about everything Skytrain does, plus a few things more...
...lure cost-conscious travelers without cutting into present economy-class revenues. After all, with more than a quarter of all Pan Am's seats between New York and London now being flown empty, every seat sold to a passenger who would not have gone at all without the cheap fare is money in the bank...
DELHI. 2.3 million passengers last year. Averages 50 landings and takeoffs daily. Two runways, 19 airlines. Delays: minimal. Accessibility: cheap and fast. Allow 20 min. for seven-mile taxi ride to the city (about $2 from airport, $3 on the way back). Bus run by a cooperative of ex-servicemen takes 15 min. longer but costs a mere 55?. Flow Through: smooth, due to recent renovation of ancient terminal. Porters abundant. Baggage handling costs 110 per piece. Longest unassisted walk: an easy 15-ft. stroll from terminal entrance to immigration counter. Immigration and customs checkout: allow half an hour. Hotels/Motels...

Women who cannot scrape up the $150 needed for a typical first trimester abortion are certainly unlikely to have enough money to raise a child under decent conditions. They are far more likely to turn to cheap, unsafe abortions, or to go unwillingly through with the pregnancy and give the child up for adoption. The court asserts the state has a "strong interest in protecting the potential life of the fetus"; what of the lives of the mothers? Thousands of women died from illegal abortions before...
...first-naming can have an expansive Jacksonian charm, suggesting some of the better American traits: a lack of social rigidity, an easy frankness. But after a while, the entire country begins to sound like a singles weekend: "Jane, this is Steve, Jack, Karen, Benny ..." Such relentless familiarity has a cheap ring. Americans do not need a Japanese system of honorifics, but they could stand to be a little stuffier. Just as there are still- possibly- some things that are not done on the first date, so first names should be held in reserve, for at least half an hour anyway...
