...McCain's steadfast opposition to all earmarks requested by individual members of Congress - the common definition of pork - could be a political liability. As a procedural matter, it makes sense to stop Representatives from slipping pet projects into law, although some legislators argue that earmarking is a useful check on executive power, and that earmarks are just a tiny sliver of the federal budget. As a moral matter, McCain's heresy on pork has made him all the right enemies, including shameless Republican porkers like Ted Stevens of Alaska; I was especially sympathetic to McCain's unpopular stand blaming...
...back in Brussels where cab drivers and video-store hounds still recognize him, but nothing else is going right. His agent's screwing him, he's lost custody of his child in an embarrassing court case and, now, as he enters a bank to try to cash a check, he finds it's been commandeered by robbers. The cops on the street figure Van Damme must have cracked and gone to the dark side, while the perps are only too happy both to exploit his fame and taunt him for being unable to overcome their guns with his kickboxing...
...brother Michael's house is flooding. He called around 7:45 a.m., asking us to check the weather report. Michael and his wife, Shannon - who's five months pregnant - lost power and water during Ike. They woke up this morning to find water lapping at their garage, and he wanted to know how much higher the water was expected to rise. Unfortunately, the answer is a lot. The seven bayous that run through and around Houston are swollen, and the rain is still coming down. (See photos of Hurricane Ike here...
...Currently, there are 68 high water closures on Houston roads. There's a really helpful website (www.houstontranstar.org.) that details exactly which roads are flooded. Of course, you have to have power to check it. The flooding is going to be a massive problem. Harris County has ordered a curfew from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. for the entire week. We're also hearing that parts of the Med Center are losing water pressure...
